Frequently Asked Questions

Can I only change my health insurance plan during Open Enrollment (November 1st-January 15th)?

No. Private health insurance plans have no SEP (Special Enrollment Period) or Open Enrollment so they are available year round. However, plans on the healthcare Marketplace can only be changed during Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period.

What is a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)?

A SEP is a time of the year outside Open Enrollment when you are eligible to sign up for a plan on the health insurance Marketplace. Typically SEPs are based on changes in specific life events. For example, losing health coverage, moving, having a baby, getting divorced, or any other change in the household usually qualifies someone for a SEP.

Am I subject to a financial penalty if I am uninsured?

No. The Federal penalty for being uninsured ( aka the "Shared Responsibility Mandate") was ended in 2018. You will not get penalized by the Federal Government for being uninsured.

Do I have to keep the insurance offered through my employer, even if I do not like it?

Absolutely not! If there is a private plan option you like more than your employer insurance, usually it's just as simple as sending a "Certificate of Insurance" to your employer's benefits department.

I have a doctor I have seen for years that I know and trust. If I change health insurance plans, will I still be able to see them?

Of course! Just make sure to mention that to your agent/broker and they can make sure to pick a plan that has your doctor in-network.

How long can my child stay on my insurance?

According to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), your child may stay on your health insurance plan until they turn 26. This may vary by a year or two depending on your state so make sure to check your state's specific requirements.
